There are five pallet racking systems you're realistically choosing between, and the right one comes down to four things: how many SKUs you carry, whether you need date rotation, how much clear height you have, and what forklifts you already own. Here's what each system is good at and where it falls down.

The five systems in detail
1 Selective Pallet Rack
The default, and usually the right answer.
Selective is the system you picture when you picture pallet racking. Upright frames, beams across them, one pallet position deep, forklift takes anything it wants straight off the aisle. It's the most common system in Northern Virginia and nationally, and for most operations it's still the correct choice.
The thing you're actually buying is selectivity. Every pallet is reachable without moving another pallet first. That sounds obvious until you compare it to a dense system, where getting to one pallet can mean pulling four others out of the lane. Once you're past roughly 40 active SKUs, or you need to pull a specific lot or date on demand, selectivity stops being a nice-to-have.
It also scales with whatever building you're in. Older buildings around 22 feet clear typically run four beam levels. Newer spec buildings in the 32 to 40 foot range get you six or seven pallet positions per column. Same system, same components, just more of it.
Selective is also the easiest system to buy used, because it's what everyone else is selling when they close or relocate. If budget is the constraint, this is where used inventory saves you the most.
One thing that catches people: Virginia's Uniform Statewide Building Code requires a permit and PE-stamped drawings for permanent racking over eight feet. That applies to selective the same as anything else. Get the stamped drawings in hand before install, not after a stop-work order.
2 Drive-In and Drive-Through Rack
Maximum density, if you can live with LIFO.
Drive-in changes the math completely. Instead of one pallet per aisle-facing position, you store 4 to 10 deep in a lane and the forklift drives inside the rack structure to place and retrieve. You end up using 60 to 80 percent of the floor for storage instead of aisles, which is roughly double the pallets of selective in the same footprint.
The catch is LIFO. Last pallet in is the first one out. That's fine for durable goods, bulk commodities and building materials. It's a problem for anything date-sensitive. Run one SKU per lane, otherwise LIFO turns into a retrieval puzzle every time somebody needs the wrong pallet.
Cold storage is where drive-in earns its keep locally. Conditioned space costs enough per square foot to build and run that the density more than pays for the LIFO constraint. Single-SKU frozen storage is the ideal case, because when everything in the lane is identical, LIFO sequencing costs you nothing.
Watch the floor. Drive-in concentrates load at fewer, larger upright bases, so slab pressure is meaningfully higher than selective. In older buildings with mid-century slabs, get a structural engineer to confirm capacity before you specify it. Newer spec buildings handle it without drama.
Drive-through is the same structure open at both ends, which buys you real FIFO. You give back some density because you need clear aisle on both sides, but if rotation genuinely can't be compromised it's the high-density option before you get into pallet flow money.
3 Push-Back Rack
Density without giving up much access.
Push-back sits between selective and drive-in. Pallets ride nested carts on inclined rails, 2 to 5 deep. Loading a pallet pushes the others back. Pull one off the front and the rest roll forward on their own, so the pick face is always full and always reachable no matter how many pallets are behind it.
The density gain over selective is real. Four deep means four pallets per aisle-facing position instead of one, which can work out to two or three times the total positions in the same footprint. And you don't need special equipment. Standard counterbalanced or reach trucks run push-back fine, which is a genuine advantage over very narrow aisle systems that need wire-guided turret trucks.
Height is the deciding factor. To get the value out of a 3 or 4 level push-back you want 30 to 36 feet of clear. The newer Class A stock delivers that. In an older building at 22 to 26 feet you're limited to two levels, and at two levels the density gain often doesn't justify the price difference over plain selective.
It's still LIFO. Less painful than drive-in because lanes are shallower, but if you need strict date rotation this isn't your system.
4 Pallet Flow Rack
FIFO at depth. Needs a flat floor.
Pallet flow is gravity-fed high-density FIFO. Load at the back, pallets ride roller wheels down to the pick face at the front, and the lane feeds itself forward as you pull from it. No power, no controls, just pitch and brakes.
This is the system for date-coded product moving in volume. Pharmaceutical and medical-device distribution with first-expiry-first-out requirements, chilled and frozen food and beverage on strict date rotation, dairy and beverage distribution where FIFO is simply how the operation runs. If rotation is a compliance requirement rather than a preference, pallet flow is usually where you land.
Floor flatness is the requirement people underestimate. The whole thing depends on pallets moving predictably from back to front. An uneven slab makes them advance erratically, sometimes too slow to fill the pick face and sometimes fast enough to be a safety problem. Get the floor surveyed before you commit, and budget for grinding if it doesn't measure up.
Pallet weight matters too. The brake rollers are calibrated to an expected weight range. A lane set up for 1,500 pound pallets behaves badly with 500 pound pallets. If your weights vary a lot, say so during design so the lanes get specified for the actual range.
5 Cantilever Rack
For anything too long to sit on a pallet.
Cantilever is a specialty system, but for long awkward material there's no substitute. Lumber, pipe, conduit, structural steel, extrusions, sheet goods, carpet rolls. None of it sits on a pallet properly, and forcing it into standard rack means damaged product and an unsafe load.
The design is a central column with arms extending out at whatever heights you need. There's no upright at the front of the position, so material loads and unloads from the side without anything in the way. That open front is the entire point.
Building materials and contractor supply is the main local market for it. Anyone carrying long stock in volume ends up here eventually.
Arm capacity is the specification people get wrong most often. It's rated per arm, not per column. A column with six arms at 2,000 pounds each carries up to 12,000 pounds per side, but no single arm can take more than its 2,000. Load one arm past rating and it fails whether or not the column total looks fine.
Outdoor cantilever gets engineered for wind and snow per the IBC provisions Virginia adopts, and needs a PE stamp on the drawings the same as indoor rack over eight feet.
How do you choose the right pallet racking system?
Four variables do almost all the work: SKU count, whether you need date rotation, your clear height, and the forklifts you already own. Run through them in that order and you will usually be down to one or two systems.
SKU count. More than about 40 active SKUs and you're on selective for the primary system, because nothing else gives you a position per SKU without creating retrieval problems. Under 40 and the dense systems open up.
Rotation. If product is date-coded and rotation is a compliance requirement, you need FIFO, which means pallet flow or drive-through. If it isn't, LIFO systems like drive-in and push-back are on the table and they're cheaper per position.
Clear height. Push-back and pallet flow need 30 feet or more before the density pays for the price. Selective and drive-in work from about 20 feet up. Cantilever is set by your material, not the building.
Forklifts. Aisle width follows equipment, and aisle width sets your total pallet count. Designing a system that needs trucks you don't own is a common and expensive mistake. Bring your actual forklift specs to the layout conversation, not the ones you might buy later.
