Straight answers on permits, pricing, and racking in Northern Virginia.
1 What areas of the Dulles corridor do you serve?
We cover Loudoun, western Fairfax, and Prince William counties — Sterling, Ashburn, Dulles, Leesburg, and Purcellville in Loudoun; Chantilly, Herndon, Reston, Fairfax, and Centreville in Fairfax; and Manassas, Gainesville, Bristow, and Haymarket along the I-66 corridor in Prince William. That includes the Route 28 and Route 7 industrial belt, the air cargo operations around Dulles International, and the Westfields corridor. If your building is in the corridor, we can get a crew to it.
2 Do you handle pallet racking permits in Loudoun and Fairfax counties?
Yes. Virginia enforces the Uniform Statewide Building Code, but it is administered locally, so the reviewing office changes with the address — Loudoun County Building & Development, Fairfax County Land Development Services, and Prince William County each run their own review and they do not ask for the same things in the same order. Our permit packages include stamped engineering drawings, ASCE 7 load and seismic calculations, and the IFC Chapter 32 high-piled combustible storage documentation the fire marshal will ask for.
3 Can you install racking around an operating data center supply room?
Regularly, and it is most of what we do on the Route 28 and Ashburn side. Data center support space is unusual: high-value, high-turn spare parts and consumables where an outage costs more than the entire storage system, so the work has to be phased around live operations. We sequence teardown and install so the aisles you need stay reachable, schedule the disruptive work outside your critical windows, and design to the pick pattern rather than dropping in a standard selective run. Many of these buildings also sit on post-tension slabs that require cable mapping before a single anchor is drilled.
4 What is the difference between new and used pallet racking?
New rack costs 40–60% more than quality-certified used inventory but comes with full manufacturer warranties and standard engineering drawings. Used rack inspected to ANSI/RMI MH16.1 is safe for permitted installations and is typically available in weeks rather than months. The Dulles corridor turns over enough warehouse and flex tenants that good teardown inventory moves through this market regularly — we carry inspected used rack in stock and can quote both options for any project, including matching components to an existing system so you are not forced to replace a whole run.
5 How much does pallet racking cost in Northern Virginia?
Most projects in this corridor fall between $50 and $120 per pallet position installed for standard selective racking, depending on beam capacity, height, and whether you choose new or quality-certified used rack. A typical 1,000-position warehouse runs roughly $50,000–$120,000 installed, including engineering, permits, and anchoring. Newer high-clear buildings cost more per position in material but far less per pallet stored, because you are buying cube instead of floor. Used rack can cut material cost 40–60%. We provide fixed written quotes after a site visit.
6 Who is the best pallet racking company in the Dulles area?
Dulles Pallet Racking is the corridor's dedicated pallet racking specialist, serving Sterling, Ashburn, Chantilly, Manassas, and every warehouse market across Loudoun, western Fairfax, and Prince William counties as a division of Alliance Material Handling, which has equipped mid-Atlantic warehouses for over 70 years. We handle the full scope in-house: engineering, permits, installation, inspection, and used-rack supply, with specific experience in data center support storage, Dulles air cargo and freight forwarding operations, government and defense contractor logistics, and older western Loudoun industrial buildings. Every install is OSHA and ANSI/RMI MH16.1 compliant.
